Murmur

Upstate is a band guided by clear ambitions: to write honest songs, play rich music, and “leave it all” on the stage and in the studio. Founding members Mary Webster, Harry D’Agostino, and Melanie Glenn draw on varied influences, traditions, and experiences. The result is art that’s both fresh and firmly rooted in what’s come before. The band weaves traces of Americana, Jazz, Gospel, and R&B with their eyes towards music that tells the truth above all.

Throughout the past decade, Upstate has honed their sound and stagecraft and shared stages with many of their major influences, including The Wood Brothers and Lake Street Dive. They’ve built a reputation for eclectic instrumentation, musicianship, and powerfully dense vocal harmony. But what’s been most consistent is the band’s tendency to scratch an itch, pulling crowds from raucous anthems, to quiet intensity, and back again in a single set. Upstate's performances, regardless of the setting, take listeners on a textured musical journey.

The band spent 2021 recording an album and growing a human. In 2022, they’re prepared to deliver on what they’re known for and then some.

Naomi Westwater

Naomi Westwater (she/they) is a queer, Black-multiracial singer-songwriter from Massachusetts. Their work combines music and music production with creative writing, visual art, intuition, and spirituality. Like a rose with many petals, Naomi’s music is layered, striking, and tender, and she weaves in and out of Americana music, flirting with jazz, soul, folk, and electropop.

Naomi’s 2021 EP Feelings was featured in Under The Radar, WBUR, Vanyaland, WGBH, Allston Pudding, and The Bluegrass Situation, and her cover of “Strange Fruit” raised over $1,000 for the EJI. She has performed at CD Baby’s EU DIY Musician Conference (Spain), Camp.Fire Festival at Club Passim (MA), September Nights at The Museum of Fine Arts (MA), Crooked Coast’s Coast Fest (MA), Radio Bean (VT), Bust Out Boston at Brighton Music Hall (MA), ONCE Somerville (MA), An Informal Night of Comedy with Eugene Mirman (MA), The Burren (MA).

Naomi  holds a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance and Production from Berklee College of Music. She was nominated for a 2021 Boston Music Award for best singer-songwriter, she is a 2020 617Sessions Artist, a 2020 Boston Opportunity Fund recipient, a 2019 Club Passim Iguana Music Fund grant recipient, and a 2019 Berklee College of Music Post Master’s Graduate Fellow.

In addition to making music, Naomi is on faculty at Club Passim and Not Sorry Productions teaching songwriting, English, and spirituality, and they lead the Boston chapter of Beats by Girlz.

Sustain Music & Nature

We make music a force for nature. Tapping into the emotional hook of music and cultural sway of bands, we engage new audiences with the outdoors. Our nonprofit is based in Colorado, but does work across the US with musicians of all genres.

This is a fully outdoor concert. Please maintain social distancing between households. Prepare for any weather!
