Songscapes Podcast: Courtney Hartman

Ep. 6: Courtney Hartman - Songwriting on a 500 Mile Walk

Award-winning folk guitarist, Courtney Hartman, joins us this week. Colorado-born and Wisconsin-based, she and Charles talk about her 500 mile pilgrimage on the Camino De Santiago in northern Spain and how that experience shaped her latest album, Ready Reckoner. Courtney talks about working with Mike Campbell, a member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and producing with Shahzad Ismaily, known for his work with Tom Waits. Our interview explores how nature plays a role in every song Courtney writes and her wish to shift our environmental perspective from “How can we do less harm?” to a more productive, “How can we do more good?”.

Are you a band interested in doing a Songscape?

Got a large following and might be interested in doing a Songscape? Check out this PDF that talks more about the process and what’s involved! Generally we’re looking for bands with more than 50,000 Facebook Followers, but we do make exceptions.

Why work with big bands? The mission of Songscapes is to create new fans for public lands. Since each Songscape takes about $10,000-$20,000 to produce, and we have extremely limited funds, we need to make sure that Songscapes reach as many people as possible. We’re trying to make America appreciate and protect its public lands, so we try to work with bands who are able to make that vision possible.

However, we know how hard emerging bands work! And we’ve worked with crazy talented emerging bands! We may be able to work something out if you’re passionate :). Email harrison@sustainmusicandnature.org
